Sally Hunter Garshell

Board Member

Sally rescued her first dog in 1997 and hasn’t stopped since. She has fostered close to 200 dogs and worked with many rescues on the east coast. While fostering and rescuing are highly important when it comes to saving lives, it is a never-ending cycle. Her hope is that by having stronger laws in place it will lessen the need to rescue as well as lessen the burden shelters and rescues are currently facing, which is simply overwhelming.

In addition to being a fur mom to her four senior dogs and two spoiled cats (and her small feral cat community), she is a Board Member for Dorchester Paws and a Humane Policy Volunteer Leader at the Humane Society of the United States. In the last few years, Sally has found the importance of being a hospice foster for dogs in need and letting them live out the end of their lives with dignity and love.

Jackie Hazlett

Board Member

Jackie has been involved in animal rescue since she was very young thanks to her mother, a former veterinary technician at Chicago’s Lincoln Park Zoo. Jackie grew up doing rescues and transports for injured wildlife, fostering litters of kittens, volunteering at local shelters, and taking zoology courses in her free time. She has rescued animals of all kinds, including a beached juvenile shark on Isle of Palms. She currently works as a Senior Analyst for a financial regulatory agency based in DC. At home, Jackie has a 9 year old Chihuahua mix who was rescued at 3 days old, along with his mom and siblings, from a rural shelter near Columbia, SC, where they were scheduled to be euthanized. She hopes that as a member of ALAL, she can help strengthen animal welfare laws and create harsher penalties for animal cruelty in South Carolina.
